ABSTRACT

Gordo & Guedes Soares (1996) compared the accuracy of the PCM method with various experimental and numerical results and Gordo & Guedes Soares (1997) have extended the approach to deal with combined bending moments and in Gordo & Guedes Soares (2000) to deal with damaged hulls. Guedes Soares et al., (2008), reported the results of a benchmark study in which the strength of a damaged ship hull was calculated with 3D nonlinear finite elements and was compared with the strength predicted by various codes based on the Smith method, showing in general a good correlation.
