ABSTRACT

In a previous paper (Benvenuto et al. 2011) the authors showed that, in case of a large container ship, the COGAS plant, compared with the most widely adopted two stroke diesel engine, may offer some advantages as regards different items such as: propulsion system efficiency, pollutant emissions, plant dimensions and weights, vibration and noise, engine room layout, engine maintenance, overall propulsion plant weight, ship loading capacity. In the same paper it was concluded that the main advantage of the diesel engine was only economic and consisted in lower operating costs (due to the low quality used fuel oil) and plant installation costs.
