ABSTRACT

In our country, each specialty has the uniform syllabus and textbook, and teachers have to follow the syllabus for teaching, and students have to read the textbook during the lecture. In Japan, there is no uniform syllabus and textbook, and in general, teachers recommend several textbooks to their students, but not mandatory to read the uniform textbook and even not any textbook during the lecture; teachers select teaching materials from dierent textbooks including the textbook used in some foreign countries such as the United States; copy the selected material, especially some related figures and tables, and distribute the materials for reference to the students who attend a lecture time just before each lecture; generally, teachers do not carry on the explanation from the beginning to the end only by virtue of a set of teaching materials. Compared to those described above in China, we think that there are some merits and also some demerits in those in Japan. The merit includes: (1) it is advantageous for the student to expand their visions and understand dierent academic style from dierent teaching material and (2) it is advantageous for the student to develop a self-study habit to study independently since they have to read these teaching materials from dierent sources in order to prepare for the test; the shortcoming includes: (1) what the student learn is not insuciently systematized and normalized, and (2) the elementary knowledge of the students is not comprehensive and solid enough.
