ABSTRACT

The tooth’s mineral tissue consists of hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals, Ca10 (PO4)6(OH)2. The inorganic content consist not only of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and oxygen (O), as indicated by the formula HAP, but also carbon (C), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and fluoride (F), as well as large trace elements. Modifications in the inorganic composition of dental structures, after the treatment with peroxide-based bleaching agents, may modify the morphology of a large quantity of crystals in the superficial layer, when compared with non-treated enamel (De Abreu et al. 2011).
