ABSTRACT

Current dental implant concepts target osseointegration, understood as the structural, direct and functional bonding between the local bone and the implant surface. Titanium and its alloys are disseminated as the base-material in dental implants manufacturing, as these are bio-inert materials. However, despite all dedicated research, not all implants show effective osseointegration, resulting in high direct and indirect costs (Lavenus et al. 2010).
