ABSTRACT

In 1992, a team of corporate strategists from Harvard Business School led by economist Michael Porter, the global competitiveness guru, embarked on a study of globally competitive Indian industrial houses. The team after 36 months of research came up with four outstanding Indian corporations; Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was the only representative from the IT industry. Talking about TCS in an October 1994 interview with Global magazine, the Porter team volunteered: ‘TCS was one of the companies that stood out: we stumbled on to it. TCS has a sharply focused business strategy and a high international orientation. TCS decided to have a global orientation, when it was still an infant’ (NASSCOM 1996).
