ABSTRACT

Ethnicity refers to variations in the human species created by the interplay of geography and heredity. Each ethnic group can be defined as a social group with a distinctive language, values, religion, customs and attitudes (Hillier 1991). In the United Kingdom there are a wide range of these groups including Turks, Greeks, Irish, Jews and West Indians. But those groups with a significant number of people include Chinese (mainly from Hong Kong), Afro-Caribbean and large numbers originating from the various countries of the Indian subcontinent including Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. For the purpose of this chapter the term ‘Asian’ will be used to cover people originating from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and East Africa.
