ABSTRACT
The large-scale industrial enterprises that appeared in Europe and America in the last quarter of the nineteenth century have played an important role in economic development. Accordingly, there is a large and growing literature on this subject. It would be appropriate to say, however, that the most influential research contribution in this area is the work of the American historian Alfred D.Chandler.
