ABSTRACT

At the start of each new academic year, teachers consider their classrooms and look at their teaching plans in the light of what they want their pupils to experience and achieve. The teaching of reading is an area where they are not short of advice; the foundation stage curriculum, the National Curriculum and the National Literacy Strategy framework are just the beginning of a plethora of documentation offering advice and ‘guidance’. It can be confusing and one is tempted to ask ‘Where do I begin?’ in deciding how to teach reading.
