Europe is older than the United States of America, but the history of the US predates that of the European Union. Both histories are hardly conceivable without their specific developments and mutual influences. The history of American unification is of course older than that of European unification. Nevertheless, informative comparisons may be made, even if different circumstances must correspondingly be taken into account.
