From accidental disagreement to structural antagonism: the US and Europe: old and new conﬂicts of interest, identities, and values, 1945–2005
Europe is older than the United States of America, but the history of the US predates that of the European Union. Both histories are hardly conceivable without their speciﬁc developments and mutual inﬂuences. The history of American uniﬁcation is of course older than that of European uniﬁcation. Nevertheless, informative comparisons may be made, even if different circumstances must correspondingly be taken into account.
