ABSTRACT

In late 1987, the skeletal remains of a middle-aged woman, unceremoniously labeled “Jane Doe No. 9,” were found buried in the foundation of a residence in an area of Los Angeles. Examination indicated that she had died of multiple stab wounds. …e upper portion of her body was encased in cement, a factor that led to her identication through a variety of unusual scientic measures. …e wet cement that had ¹owed over her body had settled in a vivid outline of her skull. …is allowed the composite artist of the Los Angeles Police Department, Scientic Investigation Division, to cast a death mask of the victim (Figure 2.1). …e mask and artist’s rendering presented a startling likeness to the victim, who was ultimately identied.
