ABSTRACT

Introduction Widespread uptake of interoperable EHRs is seen in the United Kingdom (U.K.), Ireland, and Europe as the most important advance that health services can make “towards the provision of faster, better integrated and more patient centered care.”1-3 Personal health records, owned and managed by the health consumer are increasingly seen as part of that advance.4 However, there is some way to go before systems are able to support “the cognitive tasks of clinicians or the workfl ow of the people who must actually use the system.”5 Despite developments in technology and increased investment in healthcare systems, a systematic review in 2009 found no strong evidence that nursing record systems provide benefi ts for nurses and patients.6
