ABSTRACT

In 2012, I was asked to cochair an exploratory roundtable discussion about police relations with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and fellow officers at an international law enforcement conference with the national president of PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbians & Gays). Besides myself and others who were responsible for logistics, there were maybe two chiefs of police who attended. Was it institutional apathy, fear of a stigma for attending, lack of awareness on the topic, or maybe it was just an inconvenient time slot allotted to this session? This chapter will demonstrate that it was not the time slot preventing attendance, though I wish maybe it might have been.
