Conclusions

For many decades, several methods of dietary restriction have been used to make changes in body composition. These methods have been adopted by various categories of people (sedentary and athletic individuals, both healthy and clinical patients). Total fasting, dietary restriction and/or Ramadan observance are the most commonly used options to induce changes in body mass and particularly of body fat in overweight or obese subjects. Body mass reductions may also be sought by weight-categorized athletes and others who wish to induce changes in body composition, particularly reductions in body fat and gains in fat-free mass to optimize muscle performance.
