Protein Metabolism during Dietary Restriction

WithRoy J Shephard

Normal Protein Needs of the Body The body normally needs good quality protein (containing an appropriate proportion of the ‘essential’ amino acids that the body cannot synthesize) in an amount that depends on many factors, including the person’s size, their level of habitual physical activity, the ability to satisfy the energy demands of such activity from carbohydrate and fat stores, and the added energy demands of normal growth, pregnancy, lactation, and the hypertrophy of muscle during athletic training and tissue repair following illness or injury [41,63,64,96,94].
