ABSTRACT

Undertaking a Bachelor of Physical Education degree exposed me to theory, practice and the idea of pedagogy with regard to how to teach or coach rather than merely what to teach or coach. This chapter focuses on providing a supportive and safe learning environment that encouraged the students to participate and have fun as a way of encouraging them to engage in sport and other physical activities outside and beyond school. All of the students had had some exposure to game-based approaches in their undergraduate degrees, but their depth of understanding was varied, which is always a challenge. To become health and physical education teachers at Western Sydney University, students complete a three-year undergraduate degree and then a two-year Master of Teaching. Extending quality game design, creating opportunities for students to test and formulate games, and making decisions about space, number of players and rules are all vital for developing tactically informed players.
