ABSTRACT

This chapter explains Positive Pedagogy for sport coaching (PPed) to emphasize fun and other positive emotions in coaching. Given that athlete-centred PPed is so different from the typical, coach-centred approach to coaching football, this was not surprising. Using a games-based approach presented an opportunity to put the game in the players’ hands and enhance their learning through game-like situations. Football is a sport that is well known around the world for its violence and excitement. The simplest way for a coach to begin his/her career in football is to do the drills s/he was taught and yell at the kids whenever they make a mistake. Coaches who have been around the game for a long time will struggle with understanding the concept of having fun and allowing the athletes to learn through non-linear drills and competitive sessions.
