ABSTRACT

This chapter on a very technical aspect of boxing that is typically taught using direct instruction, particularly when teaching beginners. It begins with direct instruction but gradually moved toward athlete-centred coaching as the sessions progressed. This involved increasing dialogue, reflection and collaboration and enhancing the relationships among the athletes to improve their learning. There are similarities in sporting culture and approaches to coaching across the United States, Australia and New Zealand, there are also some significant differences. These are most marked in American football and baseball – two sports that are highly controlled by the coach or coaches and in which there is less need or opportunity for player decision-making when compared to team sports elsewhere. A few of coaches had used boxing to develop their fitness for other sports, and one had done a little coaching in his role as a gym owner, but none had competed.
