ABSTRACT

Throwing heavy medicine balls most closely approximated the use of the body when throwing a javelin — moving from low to high, using the lower body to generate power through hip rotation and extending the legs and arms. As the session was conducted indoors, the athletes then progressed to throwing ‘turbo-javelins’, which are designed for such environments. Some of the students used squatting actions to transfer the force from the legs to the arms as they lifted and threw the ball forward, but others felt a little awkward imitating this action. Others experimented with throwing the ball overhead, with their backs facing the direction of the throw, which achieved some good results. Only two of the thirty-four students in the class had experience of javelin throwing before the session, but they all improved their throws because they all understood what they were doing and why.
