ABSTRACT

Based on Freud’s publication of 1919, the author deals in the following chapter with Freud’s study of the double as a lead towards the uncanny. The complex connection between an externalized ego from an earlier development phase and the current conscious ego make the double uncanny, as it represents the imagined personification of impulses which have been overcome, suppressed or even dissociated. It is shown how the uncanny has revealed itself as a pointer of development in an analytical treatment. For the patient, feeling this emotion was a psychological step forward, away from her previous paranoid anxiety. The author explains how feeling the uncanny first requires a psychological elaboration and the distancing from the original experience of a conflict.
