ABSTRACT

Planning for climate change in the Asia Pacific region presents enormous challenges and opportunities for urban communities. The challenges include the exponential population growth of cities coupled with the increasing impacts of climate change, particularly on coastal communities. This is reflected in the New Urban Agenda recently adopted by the United Nations Assembly. This chapter discusses seven pathways for more sustainable cities and regions. Pathways include the opportunities for leapfrogging to renewable energy, embedding green infrastructure into urban developments, implementing smart technology to facilitate improved urban governance and increasing community engagement.
