ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the results of a survey on sexual transit crime with 448 students holding a transit pass at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The chapter gives information about the sample, as well as transit crime in Los Angeles. Over half of the bus riders (67%) and half (50%) of the train riders indicated that they had experienced some form of sexual harassment on the bus or train system respectively. Only 8% of all the students who had experienced or observed crimes of sexual harassment on transit had reported the incident. Only 4% of female students always felt safe waiting at the bus stop or station compared to about one-fifth of the male students. The chapter briefly summarizes the main findings from the case study and makes suggestions for research and practice.
