ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the results of a survey on sexual transit crime with university students (235 female, 57 male, and 12 transgender/other/prefer not to say). Sixty-nine percent of these students had experienced verbal harassment on the bus, of which females made up 91%, while males made up 4%. Of those who reported being a victim, one third (32%) chose to report their victimization to others. The vast majority of respondents indicated they felt safe while taking the bus during the day (88%) and walking to and from the bus stop or waiting at the bus stop (84%). Seventy-one percent of students felt unsafe while using the bus after dark, while 79% felt unsafe walking to and from or waiting at a bus stop after dark. The great majority of survey respondents (87% for the bus system and 73% for the train system) engaged in a number of precautions to decrease criminal victimization while using public transit. The chapter briefly summarizes the main findings from the case study and makes suggestions for research and practice.
