ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the results of a survey on sexual transit crime with 898 students. A large number of students (633 students or 70.5%) indicated they had been exposed to different types of sexual assault or harassment. The higher crime reporting rates were registered for theft, pickpocketing, and jewelry snatching (83.8%). About half of the respondents felt always or often safe during their whole transit journey during daytime. After dark, however, only 20% of the respondents felt always or often safe using public transit and only 15.6% felt safe waiting for a transit vehicle. Victimized students were more prone to take precautions while using public transport compared to non-victimized respondents. The chapter briefly summarizes the main findings from the case study and makes suggestions for research and practice.
