ABSTRACT

This chapter draws from the empirical work with students in the 18 case study cities to give a global perspective and comparison of the phenomenon of sexual harassment in transit environments. It finds that harassment on transit is omnipresent in all cities, even though its extent may vary from city to city. Female riders are significantly more affected than male riders, but this is not only a “woman’s problem.” Underreporting of sexual crimes in transit environments is a common experience evidenced by students in all 18 countries, and students often feel the need to adopt behavioral mechanisms that range from avoidance to risk management strategies to minimize their risk of exposure to harassment.
