ABSTRACT

Experiential interventions such as imagery rescripting and chairwork are amongst the most effective methods for bringing about schema-level change and have been centralised in schema therapy (ST). This chapter provides an overview of chairwork techniques utilised in ST and describes how they can be applied in work with eating disorders (ED). The chapter begins with an introduction to the format and process of chairwork. Key chair-based techniques are then described alongside illustrative extracts from ST sessions. Common obstacles which can arise when using chairwork with ED cases, and recommendations for resolving these issues, are then discussed.
