ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to compare the built-up land expansion, population change, and environment in Delhi and Bangalore over two decades, 1991 to 2011. Using the demographic data from the census and satellite data from the United States Geological Survey, we found that there is a significant dynamism in population and spatial parameters in cities with varying magnitudes. Burgeoning built-up land has changed the land use characteristics of cities and altered the environment to a great extent. For both cities, the maximum temperature has increased significantly, whereas the minimum temperature has gone down. The extremity in temperature is found higher, and the level of air pollution is critical in Delhi compared to Bangalore.
