ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples of different national and subnational human rights systems. The concept of the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) is introduced first. The selection of different countries serves to illustrate some contrasts in national systems as well as some challenges in particular types of system and NHRI. The chapter then turns to examine NHRIs and their increasing development and integration within the global system, before concluding with an examination of the limited research that exists into the effectiveness of different aspects of national human rights systems. Specific sections will be included on Sweden, Ghana, Australia, India, and Japan.
