ABSTRACT

This chapter considers child rights, including a discussion of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This chapter explores the role of this Convention in protecting children, and the mechanisms within which this Convention works. This chapter will include a discussion that highlights the historical context of the Convention, including a discussion of changing norms around child marriage and child labour. Examples of breaches of this convention will be discussed, with two areas important to children’s rights briefly discussed: the right to education and protection against excessive labour or work.
