ABSTRACT

Facilities management has existed in higher education for some time. There are some somewhat obvious scenarios that lend themselves to a facilities management solution. A competent contract administrator with both management and technical skills is also essential. The contract administrator must understand the goals, objectives, and operational structure of the institution or have ready access to senior administrators who are responsible for these functions. Obviously, there can be a symbiotic relationship between the contract and the contract administrator. Facilities management is a fact of life in universities, albeit unfortunate and sometimes unpleasant for computing center management personnel. Identifying situations where it represents a feasible solution to existing or future problems is important. The contract for services and a competent contract administrator are the most important considerations after the facilities management alternative has been selected. The job security of some members of the community seems to be threatened by the growing awareness of the facilities management alternative.
