ABSTRACT

Microcomputers offer a unique opportunity to computer centers and individuals in colleges and universities. This chapter reviews the high growth in the development and success of microcomputers, those applications that are beginning to be available for microcomputers, and the way in which microcomputers can lower the costs of the computing resource for a college or university. In colleges and universities microcomputers can be and have been used in several subject areas. They are excellent for courses that attempt to give the student a basic level of computer literacy. For computer science and introductory computing students, microcomputers offer a facility that is difficult to match in cost-effectiveness with larger scale computers. Microcomputers can extend the large investment in university networks by providing a cost-effective solution to increasing student access to computing facilities. Micros are in fact a solution to many individual instructional and administrative problems.
