ABSTRACT

Egypt's view of recent regional developments in the region as expressed by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in his visit to the United States on March 1985 is that new prospects for peace are emerging in the Middle East. There have been some important developments recently on the Arab side. Among them is the restoration of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Egypt in October 1984. Yasir Arafat, the chairman of the Executive Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), visited Egypt, thus signaling a softening of relations between the PLO and Egypt. The meeting of the National Palestinian Council in Amman in November 1984 was a most significant event. The fact that it took place was significant. The fact that there was a quorum was significant. Palestinian democracy was on display and there was a mandate given by the Palestinian Council to the Palestinian leadership.
