ABSTRACT

Gabriel Salazar received his doctorate in economic and social history from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom in 1984. His unsurpassed scholarship in the history of the culture of Chile’s underclasses emphasizes two themes. First, their culture is indeed separate and has qualities distinct from the culture of the middle and upper classes. Second, this culture has multiple roots—that is, many groups from different parts of the country have contributed to the phenomenon of popular culture. At the close of this chapter is a glossary, which explains some of the untranslated Spanish words that have historically been associated with the popular world.
