ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the available data and speculate on the determinants and consequences of demographic factors in the post-revolutionary era. In addition to the legal ease and social promotion of marriage, the early post-revolutionary atmosphere and economic optimism about future prospects of affluence have had important positive effects on attitudes toward marriage and early marriage. The number of marriages and the crude rate of marriage, as measured by the number of marriages per 1000 people, indicate that a significant increase has occurred in the post-revolutionary era. In addition to the legal ease and social promotion of marriage, the early post-revolutionary atmosphere and economic optimism about future prospects of affluence have had important positive effects on attitudes toward marriage and early marriage. In 1976 the census of population and housing in Iran revealed a population of almost 34 million. This figure represented a 27 percent increase over the 1966 population.
