ABSTRACT

Macau is situated about 60 Kilometres to the west of Hong Kong and consists of six square miles. Macau is developing commercially and socially at an exceedingly fast pace. Portuguese priests and merchants were in Macau as long ago as 1557, but intense Portuguese cultural impact was not felt until 1887 when Portugal formally acquired political sovereignty over Macau from the Chinese Government. The study of psychology in the formal sense of controlled observation and experimentation did not exist in Macau until the establishment of the University. General and Developmental Psychology are also taught at post-secondary level in training courses offered to nurses at the Escola Technica Dos Servicos de Saude and at Corde de Sao Formuario Hospital. Psychology is so much in touch with other disciplines that it holds tremendous promise for the betterment of individual and social welfare.
