ABSTRACT

Burma covers an area of 262,000 sq. miles and supports a population of 35.6 million people. Up to the outbreak of the Second World War general and experimental psychology were taught in Burma within the Philosophy Department of the University of Rangoon. In 1957, Hla Thwin was appointed to the first chair of psychology in Rangoon as the Department achieved independent status. In 1958, Mardalay University College became the University of Mandalay and U Sein Tu, an assistant lecturer with a Ph.D from Harvard, was appointed to its first chair of psychology. At the universities, psychology is offered only to those intending to major in the subject although at teacher's training colleges and at the Institute of Education, everyone is required to take a course in educational psychology. Honours graduates can proceed to a Master's degree of four courses plus a thesis which, at the University of Mandalay, is usually in the field of psychological testing.
