ABSTRACT

During the Ronald Reagan years, Nicaragua had become the target of a war that was as much psychological as military. Throughout the world, numerous electronic wars were being waged to destabilize public opinion. The war of ideas against Nicaragua had several orientations. Perhaps the most pervasive penetration of alien values came from foreign commercial stations. The burden of responding to foreign electronic penetration fell largely on their shoulders. The foreign commercial stations whose signals could be received in Nicaragua aired material both directly and indirectly inimical to the revolutionary process in Nicaragua. At least three anti-Sandinista clandestine stations had a direct bearing on events in Nicaragua: la Voz de Sandino, Radio 15 de Septiembre and Radio Miskut. The Voice of America had been heard throughout Nicaragua from transmitters in the Caribbean. The Reagan administration's strategy for overthrowing the Nicaraguan government included using mass international propaganda as an essential component in subverting public opinion and individual morale of Nicaragua's citizens.
