ABSTRACT

Linkages among different software packages that are used for different parts of the research task are fast becoming important capabilities in the microcornputerization of the social science research process. Changing research technologies allow university researchers and local, state, and federal officials to significantly impact how data can be gathered, stored, accessed, analyzed, and presented in order to better inform rural policy. The research process can be divided into seven distinct stages-conceptualization; analysis selection, sample, or experimental design; data collection; data entry, cleanup, or transfer; data transformation and management; data analysis; and result presentation. Charting graphics are designed primarily for lay audiences, while analytical graphics are for the analyst or researcher and technical audiences. The process goes on and the answer is given regarding which experimental design is appropriate given the needs of the research project. Microcomputer software is available that can advise or help the researcher at every stage, providing as little or as much help as necessary.
