ABSTRACT

The leading navies of the world tend to concentrate their attention and resources on ocean-going warships. Predominant in surface combat is the automatic homing ship-to-ship missile, with ranges which sometimes exceed its own radar horizon. The increase in the displacement is also the result of special tactical requirements such as higher range or fast-reacting combat information systems which, until now, were usual only in frigates or destroyers. The Nanuchka class, which has been seen since the beginning of the seventies, is an impressive representation of the coastal waters combat class. In Spain, there is emphasis on the planning of large patrol craft on the one hand, and of corvettes on the other, as single-purpose types for surface combat and anti-submarine duties, in addition to larger fighting units for the high seas. British industry offers a wide range of air-cushion vehicles projects as combat units for coastal waters.
