ABSTRACT

Electronic Warfare (EW) continues to be of prime importance. The year has seen more American equipment being made available for sale overseas and it is now possible to buy radar intercept receivers and jammers in the open market. The heavy Israeli aircraft losses to the Egyptian surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) in the recent Middle East war have underlined, what the Americans knew already, the vital importance of Electronic Warfare. The term EW is now taken to mean the overall use of electronics to combat enemy weapon systems. It includes: The gathering of electronic information on enemy sensors and weapon systems, commonly known as Electronic Intelligence. The Middle East war showed how essential it is to be able to counter SAMs by electronic means. EW is probably still in its infancy, but it is highly important and well justifies a considerable amount of money being spent on it.
