ABSTRACT

In all, the present day system of military communications is first class, but it must never be forgotten that it is still possible for an enemy to jam them. As speeds of ships, and particularly submarines, increase and aircraft and missiles consistently travel faster than sound, rapid communications between ships are imperative. Voice radio is still used for communications between ships, but is being replaced by data communications for the exchange of information between ships’ operation rooms. The normal system of communication from shore to ship is by the broadcast method. A limited form of underwater communication, using sonar frequencies, is available for communication with other submarines or surface ships, but its range is very short. For wider communications between headquarters, a much more flexible system is employed. Tanks rely heavily on voice communications and use the same equipment as the rest of the Army.
