ABSTRACT

The Foundations of the Milken Families chose "The interaction of Families, Communities and Schools" as the topic for the 1993 National Education Conference in order to seize that opportunity as well as to draw on the considerable experience we have gained from working on all three fronts. A grant from the Foundations of the Milken Families covered the bulk of the capital costs of the transformation, and the City of New York, through its Departments of Transportation and Parks, provided in-kind support to cover the balance. The successful interaction of families, communities and schools is critical to the quality of education that children are equipped with as they face an exacting future. Painfully revealing of the ground that has been lost by and in the family is the fact that the importance of parental involvement in children's lives and education needs to be explained.
