China and Southeast Asia

China’s interest in Southeast Asia is fundamentally of a security nature. Only sil percent of its trade is with the nations in the region. ¹ Southeast Asia is not a source of raw materials or food for China. Nor is China very interested in the politics of the region except, of course, as political issues translate into opportunities for outside powers or the expansion of Vietnamese influence which conflict with Chinese interests.
