ABSTRACT
This chapter analyzes the diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between Costa Rica and the Soviet Union. The possibility of increased Soviet presence and influence in Latin America has acquired great importance since the election of a Republican United States president and development of the crisis in the Central American region. The commercial representative of the USSR has proposed three projects to implement this protocol in the areas of fishing, prefabricated housing, and metallurgy. Costa Rica has diplomatic relations with the following socialist countries of Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, the German Democratic Republic, Rumania, Yugoslavia, and the USSR. The USSR and Costa Rica signed the Treaty of Cultural and Scientific Cooperation in 1974, which was ratified by the legislative assembly in Agreement Number 5771. A breaking off would put the principle in question and might possibly affect relations of great importance in Latin America such as those with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, or Peru.
