ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research in agriculture and food production, but by necessity, it develops an interest in the broad fields of land use—or misuse—and demography. Research by Winrock International focuses on the potential of the world animal populations to contribute to solving world hunger problems. There are vast grass savannahs in Central Africa where food production from livestock can be significantly improved through elimination or control of the tsetse fly. Similarly, the work at CIAT shows that improved livestock management systems can significantly improve the food output from the llanos of Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil. Through the development and contributions of science and technology the present standard of living of much of the world has reached undreamed-of heights. But science and technology have also developed frighteningly powerful destructive forces, which are capable of annihilating civilization and much of today's population.
