ABSTRACT

All providers of goods and services must protect the consumers and clients from harm. The direction and insistence of these demands has forced the issues of safety and risk management to a central position in the long-range planning of riding schools, 4-H, and Pony Club riding programs. An instructor must recognize that he has a duty to provide a safe environment for the students, not only in location but in selection of horses, equipment, and program of instruction. The law will force us to monitor our actions if we don't take the initiative to develop a basic systematic risk management plan. To minimize the likelihood of injury and legal liability, we must implement a plan and develop procedures that should be followed by instructors and volunteers. Risk management is an ongoing responsibility. Considering the costs, loss of time and concern brought on by major litigation, the time spent in developing a positive risk management program is well worthwhile.
