ABSTRACT

Most stallion stations or stallion owners must depend on outside (public) mares for additional income. However, it is very important to understand some basic concepts when standing a stallion to the public. The first concept is this: only good stallions make a profit. Next, the stallion owner must set a breeding fee and should not deviate from the established service fee. This stallion service contract takes all the gentlemen's agreements and guesswork out of the horse breeding business. After the stallion service contract has been signed, the stallion and mare owner know their mutual expectations, which leads to a happier situation for all parties. Mare owners will pay for excellent mare care but will not return to a breeding farm that has given them poor mare management, regardless of its stallion battery. Communication is the key to a successful breeding establishment.
