ABSTRACT

In the long history of China, Chinese veterinarians have accumulated extensive knowledge on diagnosis and treatment of impaction. The well-known Yuan Heng Liao Ma Ji stated that impaction is an excessiveness symptom complex, retention, or stagnancy. It can be treated by acupuncture, or by drugs, or by hand. The acupuncture point is Guanyuanyu, which is located bilaterally in the depression at the intersection between the ventral margin of the longissimus dorsi muscle and the caudal edge of the last rib. After acupuncture, the output and frequency switch should be turned from high to low to "0" before withdrawing the needle. Electroacupuncture for each treatment takes about 20 min to 30 min. When the electroacupuncture is begun, the animal's bilateral abdominal muscles show rhythmatic contractions parallel with the frequency. Affected animals are stabilized in standing position. The site of the acupuncture point is shaved and sterilized as routine.
