ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Peking regime's attitude toward the threat of "peaceful evolution," the countermeasures that the Chinese Communist Party authorities have adopted to cope with it, and the chances of such an evolution taking place. Since the Tienanmen massacre, the Chinese Communists have published a series of books and articles sternly criticizing the idea of "peaceful evolution." The Chinese Communists fear that the influence of the so-called bourgeois view of the law of value and the Western way of life will erode socialism on the Chinese mainland. In the political sphere, efforts have been made to get rid of the influence of Western ideologies among cadres and ensure that power at all levels of the Party and government is in the hands of loyal Marxists. The regime has also removed a number of paramilitary police leaders who are considered to be politically unreliable.
