ABSTRACT

A diverse ant community was studied in open Acacia woodland on the southern edge of the Australian arid zone in the Gawler Ranges, South Australia. Species distribution, abundance, and colony size were studied for subterranean termites in southern Mississippi. Populations of a three species complex of yellowjackets, Vespula pennsylvanica, V. atropilosa and V. sulphurea, have been monitored with heptyl butyrate baited traps for the past seven years in a heptyl butyrate baited traps for the past seven years in a southern California canyon. Population dynamics of Pogonomyrmex workers were studied in Florida and Idaho. High temperatures during the period of early nest development in 1981 appeared to be very deleterious for annual worker catch was less than 20% of normal. Worker populations trapped were 25% higher than normal in that year. This work is part of a continuing project on community structure amongst Australian ants.
